Week 2 came and went and what it left us with were some fairly large injuries, specifically to big names at the quarterback position. So, without further ado, let's get into our Injuries and Opportunities.
Quarterbacks
Injury: Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals (O - Toe)
Opportunity: Jake Browning
Burrow left Sunday's game early with a toe injury. At first, there seemed to be optimism seeing he was walking around on his own power. But as the saying goes 'time will tell'. And what did it tell us? Well, it said Burrow will miss three months, at the very least, as his toe requires surgery.
This leaves Jake Browning as the new starting QB for the Bengals. In the right matchups, I can see Browning being an okay start in superflex leagues. But the biggest impact to fantasy players will be to Chase Brown, Jamarr Chase and Tee Higgins. All should expect a lower weekly upside. However, all will remain starters in your lineups. I expect Chase Brown to get more touches in the run game to alleviate some pressure from the back up quarterback.
Injury: Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders (Q - Knee)
Opportunity: Marcus Mariota
Daniels suffered a knee sprain that has now put his status 'up in the air' for Week 3. It seems Daniels is truly questionable. If Daniels plays, expect limited production due to his rushing ability being mitigated. If Daniels can't go, Mariota is no more than a low-end QB2 option.
Injury: J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings (O - Ankle)
Opportunity: Carson Wentz
McCarthy's missed time is expected to be between 2-4 weeks. Depending on how his high ankle sprain heals in this time, considering the Vikings Week 6 bye, there is a good chance we do not see the second year quarterback until Week 7. In this time, Carson Wentz figures to get the start. Wentz is a proven QB that hasn't seen much action in quite some time. This obviously limits upside to players like Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson, but due to their roles in the offense, Wentz should figure to give them their fair share of targets.
Jordan Mason should expect to be leaned on, especially now that Aaron Jones will miss time.
Injury: Justin Fields, New York Jets (Q - Concussion)
Opportunity: Tyrod Taylor
Fields left Sunday's blowout loss with a concussion. Now he must beat the NFLs five step protocol in order to make it in next week. We will need to monitor this closely. Chances or more likely on the side of Fields missing time. If so, Tyrone Taylor is in line to start. Taylor is a seasoned vet who can handle gameday pretty well. Although, next week's matchup is against a tough Tampa Bay defense and New York is a run heavy offense. So, Taylor isn't a very confident play. I would slightly downgrade most of the offense if Taylor plays. Who knows, maybe Tyrod can turn Mason Taylor into his new Charles Clay? (For those who remember)
Running Backs
Injury: Austin Ekeler, Washington Commanders (IR - Achilles)
Opportunity: Bill Crosky-Merritt
Ekeler unfortunately suffered a season ending injury on Thursday night. This injury now justifies a lot of the Bill Crosky hype this off-season as he now figures to be the RB1 for the team. I expect him to perform as a safe weekly RB2 with some upside.
Injury: Aaron Jones, Minnesota Vikings (O - Hamstring)
Opportunity: - Jordan Mason
Jones suffered a hamstring injury, which running backs at his age can expect at least two weeks of missed time. This immediately moves Mason into a high-end RB2 with weekly RB1 upside. With McCarthy also expected to miss time, Mason will be leaned on heavily.
Wide Receivers
Injury: Jayden Reed, Green Bay Packers (O - Shoulder)
Opportunity: Matthew Golden, Romeo Doubs
Reed suffered a broken clavicle on a touchdown catch (well, negated by penalty) Thursday against the Commanders. I wouldn't expect him back until Week 7 or 8 at the earliest. This opens things up for Golden, Green Bays' first round rookie, who should have a chance to show off why he was drafted so high. I expect both him and Doubs to see an increase in targets on what seems to be a very efficient offense. Both players are viable flex options.
Injury: Brian Thomas Jr, Jacksonville Jaguars (P - Wrist)
Opportunity: Travis Hunter, Travis Etienne
Thomas Jr seems to have left last Sunday's game against the Bengals with a wrist injury. It doesn't seem to be very serious, and although reported, he was not listed on the initial injury reported. This leads me to believe he will be on the field next week and in your lineups, despite back-to-back disappointing fantasy finishes.
