Chances are good that you are much more concerned with your NFL fantasy teams than anything having to do with the NBA fantasy leagues. That’s understandable, of course, the NBA season is months away, while the NFL will get rolling in a couple of weeks.

With that in mind, I’m not going to tell you anything that will require you to take too much focus away from your fantasy football team. But now that the NBA schedule has been released, I have a few things to keep in mind when your NBA fantasy draft approaches.

Back-to-Backs

Years ago, when teams played back-to-back games, that meant you were getting one more game out of fantasy players on those rosters. But nowadays, with ‘load management’ being an unfortunate norm, that is no longer true. Instead, there’s a chance certain players will sit out at least one game.

Now that the schedule is out, we know:

  • Fifteen teams have 16 back-to-backs (i.e., Lakers, Spurs, Nuggets, Warriors, 76ers, Mavericks, etc.).
  • Five teams have 15 (Clippers, Heat, Pelicans, Jazz, and Trail Blazers).
  • Five teams have 14 (Bucks, Rockets, Cavaliers, Grizzlies, and Magic).
  • Five teams have 13 (Thunder, Bulls, Timberwolves, Pacers, and Hawks).

Players who often miss games for load management are probably more likely to do so in the second half of a back-to-back. So, if it’s your turn to pick and your best choices are down to a player likely to skip 13 games and one to skip 16, guys from teams with 13 back-to-backs may have more value.

Rest Advantage/Disadvantage

A team that has a rest advantage is more likely to bring more energy to the game and possibly play better. Those at a disadvantage are, of course, more likely to struggle. Philadelphia, Utah, and Sacramento lead the way with 14 games with a rest advantage.

On the other end of the discussion, the Warriors will be at a disadvantage in 14 games. While the 76ers are one of three teams with a 14-game advantage, they are also at a disadvantage in 12 games.

So, for teams like Golden State with 16 back-to-backs and 14 games where they are at a rest disadvantage for 14, maybe you look elsewhere if you’re thinking of selecting anyone other than Steph Curry.

Five Game Weeks

The more they play, the more they can record fantasy points for your team. Typically, the most you can hope for is four games in any given week. But, on occasion, teams will have five. If you happen to have a player on a team playing five games during one of your league's playoff weeks, that can be a significant advantage depending on the player.

Here are the teams and their 5-game weeks:

  • Los Angeles Lakers (Week 13)
  • Miami Heat (Week 14)
  • Philadelphia 76ers (Week 21)
  • Suns and Wizards (Week 22)

If you happen to have a player from the Suns and Wizards (if they have a fantasy-relevant player) in Week 22, advantage you!
