Traditional fantasy leagues end before the regular season, but daily fantasy games live on for as long as the postseason does. So, with the play-in tournament on deck this week, I thought it would be fun to play a version of that "Kiss, Marry, Kill" game.
I’ve taken a hard look at the teams that will be taking part in the play-in tournament with one goal in mind: to identify one player that I’d like to have on my DFS team (kiss), one I absolutely must have (marry), and one guy that there is no way in **** I’m picking up (kill).
In the interest of keeping all three selections interesting, the ‘kill’ selection must be someone who plays. It cannot be someone who doesn’t play or plays just a few minutes.
Easter Conference Play-In Tournament
My selections will be for each game according to what their seed would be if the tournament were to start on Saturday, April 12.
No. 7 Orlando Magic vs. No. 8 Atlanta Hawks
-
Kiss: Paolo Banchero
-
Marry: Franz Wagner
-
Kill: Onyeka Okongwu
I know what y’all are going to say: how in the world can I not ‘marry’ Trae Young? Easy-- because Orlando has the stingiest defense in the NBA and I think there is more of a chance he’s a dud (for DFS purposes) than a stud.
Why kill Okongwu? At first glance, I thought he might be the ‘kiss’ option as a legit threat to record a double-double on any given night. But then I looked at the box scores for the three ATL-ORL games. Yeah, he only had one really big game, but the other two were forgettable.
As for Banchero and Wagner, those guys are going to tear up Atlanta’s questionable defense.
No. 9 Chicago Bulls vs. No. 10 Miami Heat
-
Kiss: Nikola Vucevic
-
Marry: Josh Giddey
-
Kill: Tyler Herro
Vucevic doesn’t always have big numbers, but he seems to record stats in quite a few categories (and they add up for fantasy purposes in the end). I initially had Herro as the ‘kiss’ option; when he gets on a roll, the man can score in bunches.
But if he’s not scoring, you can’t rely on him to bring much else to the table. At his price, I want someone more reliable. As for Giddey, he was the easiest choice. Of course, I’ll want to ‘marry’ a player who recorded a triple-double against the opposing team twice!
Western Conference Play-In Tournament
My selections will be for each game according to what their seed would be if the tournament were to start on Saturday, April 12.
No. 7 Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies
-
Kiss: Ja Morant
-
Marry: Steph Curry
-
Kill: Draymond Green
You kind of have to say ‘marry’ for Steph. He’ll more than likely at least give you a good night on the stat sheet, but there is always a chance he goes off and gives you a great one. I flip-flopped between Morant and Jaren Jackson but went with Morant because he’s the more dynamic player of the two.
As for ‘killing’ Draymond Green, his price tag is pretty cheap for a guy who recorded a triple-double the last time these two teams played. But he’s more likely to have a subpar DFS day than a big one.
No. 9 Sacramento Kings vs. No. 10 Dallas Mavericks
-
Kiss: Zach LaVine
-
Marry: Domantas Sabonis
-
Kill: Anthony Davis
I almost went with DeMar DeRozan to ‘kiss,’ but he seems like a one-trick pony that is great for scoring but not much else. So, if he doesn’t score and he’s on your team, you’re in trouble. LaVine is like DeRozan and primarily a scoring machine, but a little less expensive.
Regarding Anthony Davis, I’ll always worry about whether he’ll get hurt and not finish the game. With the price tag on him, he just isn’t worth it.
DFS success during the NBA Play-In Tournament comes down to making smart, strategic choices—and avoiding the big-name traps. Whether you’re locking in stars like Steph Curry or steering clear of pricey risks like Anthony Davis, this "Kiss, Marry, Kill" guide should help you feel more confident about every lineup you build. Now get out there, trust your gut, and crush your contests!
