Alfred Morris – Redskins: Possibly the most quintessential type of player to avoid in PPR leagues, Alfred Morris should not be considered until the late-fourth round or later in such formats. Alf is as consistent as they come, but has no upside as he has caught a total of only 37 passes in his three year career. His lack of usage as a pass-catching back seriously disadvantages him in PPR leagues. The Skins will be running a new rushing scheme in 2015, but Morris has never been prolific out of the back-field, so look for more of the same.
Frank Gore – Colts: The former 49er used to be effective as a receiver, but has he’s aged, Gore has lost his edge as an aerial threat. Though the Colts will pass the ball more than most teams, quarterback Andrew Luck has a wide variety of targets to through to, and Gore is low on the list. At 32, Gore has already entered the twilight of his career. He’ll be useful as a ground and pound back, but he won’t see much in the passing game this season. Avoid Gore until the 45th pick in PPR leagues.
Mark Ingram – Saints: New Orleans made it clear that Ingram would have a limited role in the passing game when they signed C.J. Spiller this offseason. Spiller will see the field on the bulk of 3rd down and passing situations, so look for Ingram to have his presence limited to the run-game. The former Alabama star is a capable receiving back, but the shifty Spiller will provide a balance to the run game that few offenses can boast. Shy away from Ingram unless he falls to past the 35th pick.
Jeremy Hill – Bengals: It’s not as though Hill is a player to avoid in PPR leagues, but owners should be cautious about drafting him. Hill’s upside in PPR is limited because of his counterpart in Giovani Bernard. Gio is one of the best weapons out of the backfield in the game, so Cincinnati is going to tend to bring him in on passing downs. Hill will still be used enough to warrant him being a late second rounder, but he’s a bad pick before then.
Melvin Gordon – Chargers: Especially for a rookie, Gordon has been receiving quite a bit of hype in RB news this offseason and has carried an overvalued draft stock into PPR drafts. With unsure hands out of the back-field, Gordon has looked as though he will have to come off the field on third-downs this season. He’s improved as a receiver lately, but even so, the Chargers have better options to fill the pass-catching role. Danny Woodhead, a more than capable player, will assume the position, limiting Gordon’s potential in PPR leagues, and making him not worth any pick higher than the 50th.
